Suicide Squad alum David Ayer and Will Smith reunite for Netflix Bright
Earlier this year Netflix won the rights to a script written by Max Landis, a sci-fi cop thriller story called Bright. Did I say “won” I meant to say bought. Deadline predicts Netflix will commit some $90 Million on this upcoming feature. David Ayer (Suicide Squad) will direct Will Smith (also Suicide Squad) and Joel Edgerton (Black Mass) in this magic-infused tale.
Bright is described as a world where humans and “magical creatures” coexist in a tension filled melting pot, ok maybe melting pot is not the right term, but you get the idea. It will mix Landis’ own End of Watch gritty cop feel, with Alien Nation – where a human officer is forced to partner with an alien officer. Smith, playing the human, works for a special tactical division which handles crimes involving magic. I’m thinking something like PlayStation’s Powers, based on Brian Michael Bendis’ comic. Joining Mr. Smith will be Edgerton as an “Orc”. The odd couple must find a powerful wand before unknown evil elements can wield its immense power. A late addition to the party is actress Lucy Fry. According to THR she will be playing Tikka, a young elf with powers who is in possession of the aforementioned wand and must be protected by Smith and Edgerton.
The sure to be R-rated film starts shooting this fall in Los Angeles.
