This week we should get the first trailer for The Dark Tower, and in preparation Sony released the first poster for the science fiction / horror film. Yes nice, but where is the actual film you might be saying. Originally set for a March release the film arrives in July – the 28th to be exact. They delay rumored to be the amount of visual effects required and possibly timing. Because also in the works is a companion TV series that will fill in some of the detailed backstory to The Dark Tower film. According to EW the small screen will focus on King’s original novel, “The Gunslinger, that will form part of the TV series while the bulk of the show will focus on the fourth book in the saga, Wizard and Glass.”

Based on a series of novels, over 4000 pages worth, by Stephen King the fantasy film has been described as a new take on the printed series. The much anticipated film is most likely a semi-sequel to the book series. Mr. King has previously tweeted a photo of the Horn of Eld with the caption “Last Time Around.” Which is a bit of a spoiler for fans as it is reference to the end of the final book, and it implies a continuation of the story vs. a retelling.

The Dark Tower directed and co-written by Nikolaj Arcel, stars Tom Taylor as Jake the 11 year-old adventurer who starts this whole story in motion, Matthew McConaughey as Walter The Man in Black, and Idris Elba (Luther) as Roland Deschain.

Story synopsis:

Jake, who is still reeling over the death of his hero dad, a first responder on 9/11 who succumbed to toxic exposure, has a series of terrifying and apocalyptic visions that have made him doubt his own sanity. But when Jake narrowly avoids being abducted by terrifying creatures in human form, he escapes into another world. In this strange new reality, Jake teams with weary and disillusioned hero, Roland Deschain, a knight-like warrior bent solely on avenging himself against his age-old nemesis.
