Orcs and elves in the world of Bright
Netflix has given us a short but very insightful look at one of it’s biggest science fiction exclusives ever, it’s called Bright and it stars Will Smith. We first talked about Bright last October and we knew it was going to be something interesting. Rumored to be in the $100 million dollar range, this film will be a big deal. Of course a significant portion of that check will be written to Mr. Smith and some to co-star Joel Edgerton. I’m hoping the other half is used for the “alternate present-day world” where some weirdness is about to happen.
People have been getting a very Shadowrun vibe from this first trailer (below), and yeah I can totally see that. It seems to contain many of the key ingredients. Science fantasy set in a near-future world (LA in this case) where humans, magic, and fantasy creatures co-mingle – check. And judging from this trailer, Bright will have a horror / crime detective undertone.
While it may borrow from that world, Bright is an original cop thriller script from Max Landis, that will be directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad). It finds Will Smith as human cop in a world where homosapains, orcs, elves, fairies, another other stuff, have been coexisting since the dawn of time. Will’s new partner Jakoby, is orc played by the aforementioned Joel Edgeron. Together they must dispatch multiple bad dudes to “to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.”
On a side note, David will also be producing and directing Gotham City Sirens, another DC story starring Margot Robbie.
It sounds as bizarre as it looks in this trailer, including a gigantic Longclaw looking sword that Will Smith is about to grab?
