Okja is director Bong Joon-ho next science fiction film

From the man who brought us the thriller Snowpiercer comes a new science fiction film called Okja, about the “bond between man and animal.” And I’m going to add, how we should probably not combine them at any point now or in the future. Because this my friends appears to be a cautionary tale.

Starring Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer, Doctor Strange) as an apparently well-to-do scientist up to something in the genetic engineering world, the teaser only gives a few moments from the story. (See the new Okja trailer below.) The film to be released as a Netflix exclusive, also stars teenage actress Ahn Seo-hyun who will play Mija. We find her ambling about a dense forest possibly finding a man-elephant creature she eventually names Okja. Possibly Tilda’s first go at combining man and animal, or maybe an escaped creature Mija must hide and protect?

Apparently a bit of both according to a Netflix synopsis. “From visionary Director Bong Joon Ho, this grand global adventure follows a friendship too big to ignore. Meet Mija, a young girl who risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend.” Netflix also described the film as a “coming-of-age comedy drama.” Comedy? I wonder how that is going to work.

Joining the cast is Jake Gyllenhaal and Lily Collins.  Okja is a Netflix exclusive and it will arrive on June 28th on the premium service, and as a limited theatrical run.
