CD Projekt Red announces dual AAA dev teams
There are even more signs that a fourth version of the Witcher series is coming, probably sooner than we thought and probably not going to be called Witcher 4 however. CD Projekt Red, the developer of The Witcher games and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, gave notice in a recent financial report that they’re pursuing a “dual-franchise model” going forward. Wired and Polygon have reported that this effectively means they will be working on two separate AAA franchises with independent development teams. This official statement also indicates that Witcher 4 is currently in development.
“Managing two separate major franchises (The Witcher and Cyberpunk), along with several independent development teams, enables the Company to conduct parallel work on several projects and smoothens its long-term release schedule,” the company says. “This migration towards a dual-franchise model supported by several independent product lines also permits optimization of manufacturing and financial activities, mitigates important risk factors and makes it easier for Company employees to seek professional fulfillment.”
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a big success for Poland based Projekt Red and it’s not a big surprise that a 4th version would be coming. But the expedited timeline tho – that is encouraging. However we have a few years of rumors and announcements before anything comes into focus. In the meantime we have Cyberpunk 2077 to look forward to. Cyberpunk 2077 is due April 16, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and for the Xbox One. The game will also be released for Google Stadia.
And don’t forget Netflix will be launching a Witcher TV series based on the video game. We got a short preview at SDCC this year, and it sounds like the timing for a release is this fall.
